Baby Food Aisle Full of Crud

I was in Wal-Mart (we don’t have a lot of shopping choices in my town) yesterday and stopped by the baby food aisle, something I never do, since I make our baby food at home from the same foods we (as a family) eat. I just wanted to see if I could pick-up a quick snack for my two year old. I knew that the rest of his preschool class would be having animal crackers that were full of soy, high fructose corn syrup, and who knows what else, but I also knew I didn’t have the time to make a homemade sprouted version, but maybe the toddler section would have a compromise; something without trans-fat, soy or HFCS. I had no such luck, everything was filled with yucky stuff, and I couldn’t find anything that didn’t contain at least one of those three items, soy being the worst offender. While being rushed and annoyed I started to look around for anything that would work and noticed that the aisle was full of LOW FAT items. LOW FAT for babies and toddlers. What!?! I know that I am immersed in real food and traditional food reading, blogging, talking, thinking, but I was under the impression that the rest of the world at least knows that babies need fat for their growing brains and bodies! I doubled checked with kidshealth.org  (because I figured it would contain the government propaganda that most parents receive) and what I could find said that kids under two should have whole milk, but I guess that recommendation doesn’t apply to foods other than milk? It amazes me that fat (good fat) is not supposed to be in food for our babies but high fructose corn syrup is. Some things just make me sad.

I am fortunate to have found a more traditional approach to food and grateful that perhaps one day real food for our children of all ages (not just those under two!) will be the norm.
