2011 Pumpkin Picking

This past weekend I took my boys pumpkin picking. I have done this every year possible since high school when I used to paint faces at a local pumpkin patch each fall. I was afraid we missed our chance this year with October already becoming a distant memory, but I was lucky enough to stumble onto the last weekend Gross Farms was offering their pumpkins. This also meant they were on SALE; all you could carry for $5. My little ones and I made a day of our adventure. We played on the cool train and pirate ship playground, jumped on the giant bounce land and made THREE trips into the pumpkin patch. I filled my arms up as much as possible, loaded the bottom of the stroller and stuffed smaller pumpkins into a backpack so I could get it all up to the check-out counter. I found that I could stack the longer skinnier pumpkins like logs and therefore carry more of them. One of the things I love most about Gross Farms (aside from the amusing name) is that they grow different varietals. Who wants just hum-drum ole jack-o-lanterns, not me! The other thing I love about Gross Farms is that they grow their own pumpkins they don’t just cart them in; you can actually pick your pumpkin/winter squash off of the vine. When all was said and done we came home with 22 pumpkins for $25, what a great haul! Of course now the processing (and eating) begins!
